A face mask with the wimple and veil attached: bone-white skin, sunken black sockets, amber eyes, a black mouth, hairline cracks along the brow and chin. The veil hangs well below the chin on both sides, so the shape holds at a distance. It goes on the porch, at the door, or on a stand in the front window.
The black veil falls long on both sides and frames a white wimple, so the silhouette registers before the face does. Stand still under the porch light and that pale oval is the only bright thing on the step.
