The reaper that does not come alone

A hooded reaper in a floor-length black shroud, one gray clawed hand holding a girl in a pink nightgown off the ground while green light runs from his mouth to hers. He waits for the noise of kids coming up the walk, then plays out the scene. He goes on the front lawn a few feet off the path, where the whole thing reads from the sidewalk.

Two figures, one look

Most lawn reapers are a single prop you have to build a scene around. This one arrives with the scene: the girl in the pink nightgown, the gray hand under her chin, the green glow between them. From the sidewalk nobody needs it explained.

The shroud hides the hardware

The black robe runs all the way down and pools on the ground, so there is no visible stand or frame from the street. Set him on the grass and he looks like he is standing there on his own. Leave the folds loose; they read better than a tidy hem.

Plug-in, 120V, slightly scary

No battery hunt on the 31st. An outdoor outlet, or an extension cord out to one, and he stays on until you pull the plug. On our scale he is slightly scary: the small kids get a jolt and keep walking, the older ones stop and look.

Halloween night, then the tote

Plug him in at dusk, a few feet off the walk. Every group that comes up sets him off, gets the green glow and the girl in the pink nightgown, and decides the candy is still worth it.

  • Reaper and the girl in the pink nightgown in one piece
  • Sound trigger: the group coming up the walk sets it off
  • Plug-in 120V, shroud to the ground so the base never shows
What sets it off?

Sound. Voices from a group coming up the walk trigger it; a gusty night on its own does not. You do not have to stand there working it.

What kind of power does it need?

A standard 120V outlet. Run an outdoor-rated extension cord out to it, tuck the cord down, and it stays on until you unplug it. No batteries.

Can it stay outside?

Yes, it is built for outdoor display through the season. Bring it in if a storm is coming through.

Is it too much for small kids?

It sits at slightly scary. The little ones get a jolt and keep walking; the older ones stop and look.

Where should it go?

On the lawn a few feet off the walkway, where the whole scene reads from the sidewalk. The shroud runs to the ground and pools, so no stand or frame shows from the street.

What happens after Halloween?

It unplugs, the shroud folds down flat, and the pair goes back in the tote until next October.
