Static, 20 inches, hangs on the door

Hat on top, boots underneath, no witch in between

A 20-inch mesh wreath done up as a witch who never quite made it through the door: purple spiderweb hat up top, striped legs and pointy black boots dangling off the bottom, three orange pumpkins and a checkered BOO sign in the middle. It doesn't move or make a sound. It hangs on the front door or the covered porch and lets the kids work out where the rest of her went.

Right where they stand

Everything else in the yard gets seen from the sidewalk. This one is at the door, at kid height, and it's what they're staring at for the few seconds it takes you to answer the bell.

Reads from the street

Black mesh and black leaves underneath, then ribbon on top in purple polka dot, lime skulls, orange chevron and black-and-white check. It's busy on purpose, so it doesn't vanish into a dark door at dusk.

Slightly scary, and that's the setting

The ghost on the sign is grinning and the witch's boots are the punchline. Toddlers in the stroller crowd don't turn around at the end of the walk, and the older ones still get the joke.

What happens at the door on the 31st

Porch light on, door swings open, and a kid in a dinosaur suit is nose to nose with a witch stuck in your door. That's the whole trick. Nothing to switch on, nothing to reset between groups. On November 1st it comes off the hook the way it went on.

  • 20-inch mesh wreath, hung where the kids are already looking
  • Hat, striped legs and boots — the witch is the punchline
  • Nothing to switch on and nothing to reset between groups
Does it move or make a sound?

No. It is a static wreath. Nothing moves, nothing plugs in and nothing makes a noise, so there is nothing to switch on and nothing to reset between groups.

How big is it?

Twenty inches tall, hat to boots. On a front door that lands at about the height a kid standing on the step is already looking.

How does it hang?

On a door hook or an over-door hanger. Nothing gets nailed into the frame, and on November first it lifts off the way it went on.

What is on it?

A purple spiderweb hat at the top, striped legs and pointy black boots off the bottom, three orange pumpkins and a checkered BOO sign in the middle, all on black mesh with black leaves and ribbon in purple polka dot, lime skulls, orange chevron and black-and-white check.

Can it hang outside?

Keep it on the front door indoors or under a covered porch that stays dry. Mesh and ribbon hold their shape out of the weather, not in it.

Will it scare a toddler?

It is a joke, not a jump scare: a witch who never made it through the door. The ghost on the sign is grinning, and the stroller crowd makes it up the walk.
